WHAT IS DIRECT CREMATION?
Direct cremation is also known as an unwitnessed cremation and is sometimes confused with advertising from the company ‘Pure’ cremation. The process of cremation is the same as a traditional cremation but there is no service element, the cremation is held unwitnessed meaning no mourners are in attendance.

A direct cremation is a packaged funeral option inclusive of local collection from the place of death, care and shelter in our mortuary, provision of a cardboard coffin or similar, private ambulance transfer to the crematorium and the return of ashes to the family.

There is no viewing, no service and no mourner can attend, no officiant to speak and as no service time is booked at the crematorium, the coffin is ‘dropped off’ at the direct cremation time slot.

In years gone by, this was considered a ‘pauper’s funeral’ or an indigent ‘disposal’ for those with no funds or family, although constant advertising campaigns have changed view and opinion.

The downside of this service is there is no opportunity to say goodbye. Funerals are not always for those who have passed on, they are for those who are left behind. It can be very difficult to come to terms with a loss when there has not been a formal farewell.

The only thing which the family receive are the Ashes.

DO BRODIES DO DIRECT CREMATIONS?
Of course, this is something we at Brodies have handled for clients for decades and can easily help with. The benefit of Brodies taking care of the arrangements is you are dealing with us locally and all care will be from our premises. Everything is local and transparent; this is something the online companies cannot offer.

We price this option inclusive of the crematorium fee at £1500.00 as of April 2024 and is a non-upgradable packaged service type.
